What a fantastic weekend we had. The weather was GLORIOUS which was ace - except for the fact that we still didn't see rain in the Pantheon (The Pantheon has a large open circular hole in the roof, designed so that rain would fall through in a perfect column and then drain away). Still, it gives us an excuse to return...
We ate at our favourite restaurants - Cul de Sac, Bassetti's, Orso 80, but couldn't get into Baffetto's unfortunately. We enjoyed ice cream from our favourite gelateria - Blue Ice, just off Piazza Navona.
Drama over the accommodation. I had booked us into a B&B based on some reviews on TripAdvisor, but when we got there it wasn't really as described. The rooms were tiny, and very noisy, and the bed was hugely uncomfortable. After a really bad night's sleep, we decided to find an internet cafe and see what else we could get. We paid for 3 nights, made our excuses and left... to go to the hotel we had booked into, only to be told that they didn't actually have any rooms available, and so they were moving us to a sister hotel, 20 minutes walk away (luckily they paid for a cab, and were very apologetic!). It was supposed to be a 4*, but there was no lift, and no breakfast except a rubbish croissant and coffee in a cafe across the road... the furnishings were from Ikea and it was very sparse. BUT, the bed was comfy and it had double glazing so was relatively quiet.
It was good in a way, because it forced us to explore an area we weren't as familiar with, and we did lots of walking as all our favourite spots were a good walk away.
We discovered lots of new treasures and have started writing a list for next time as well!
Hotels in Rome aren't cheap, but if you're prepared to take a chance, the last minute deals are pretty okay. Prices have gone up, partly because of the exchange rate, but also just seem to be higher in general.
We had a fab time though, and can't wait to go back! Probably have to leave a couple of years though...
